Five years in business, and the first time in a room full of strangers.
Not a start-up. A business that had traded for five years on whatever came through the door, run by an owner who had never once attended a networking event.
Where they were
The business had grown only as far as the owner's existing contacts could carry it. What it had never done was go out and build new relationships on purpose. The idea made the owner uncomfortable, and when he looked at what was available he could not tell which rooms were for him and which were a waste of an evening.
So the business stayed the size it was.
What we did
Sixteen sessions across four months, moving from preparation to practice to habit.
- Decide which rooms. Not every event. We chose the groups where the buyers, referrers and complementary trades for portable cabins actually were, and ignored the rest. Three channels were selected: BNI for structured weekly referrals, Polish Business Link for the owner's own community, and LinkedIn to stay visible between meetings.
- Have something to say. A clear, natural answer to "what do you do" that named the problem the business solved rather than listing services. Rehearsed until it was his, not mine.
- Show up with a plan. Each event with a goal small enough to hit: two real conversations, one follow-up within two days. The shyness did not disappear; it stopped mattering, because he always knew what he was there to do.
- Follow up like it matters. A simple record of who he met, what they discussed and when to get back in touch, worked through weekly in the sessions until it was habit.
- Give first. Introductions made for other people without expecting a return. In a referral group that is how trust is built, and it is what turned acquaintances into a source of work.
Where they are now
After one month of networking, the first two clients. After three months, five new clients, all through networking, relationships and referrals. A five-year-old business that had grown only by accident now has a way of growing on purpose, run by an owner who could not previously walk into the room.
Anonymised at the client's request.
